Lori Atkinson served as the Executive Director of the John Atkinson Lung Cancer Foundation. Lori, along with John's brother, Kevin, co-founded the foundation in July of 2009. After many hours of work and discussions, the foundation was recognized by the IRS as a non-profit in October of 2010. Lori was the co-chair for the annual Rock to Raise fundraiser and assisted with the scholarship program, both of which were the backbone of the John Atkinson Lung Cancer Foundation. Lori handled many of the daily tasks for the foundation including correspondence, bookkeeping, social media posts, website editing and more. Along with her work behind the scenes, Lori was also actively involved in the community. She helped coordinate lung cancer vigils in Omaha, helped with the scholarship dinner, ran lung cancer booths at various events and also attended a lung cancer awareness event on Capitol Hill.
Lori is John's widow and a proud mother of three beautiful children, Machaela, Andrea and Christopher. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Education and is a former middle school English teacher. She currently works as the Operations Director for The Kim Foundation in Omaha. She is active in her church choir and teaches Sunday School. John's favorite quote, "Never, never give up" is Lori's inspiration to keep moving forward and make a difference in lung cancer awareness.
